Rockwall is a city and the county seat of Rockwall County, Texas with a total area of 31.6 square miles. In 1851, the first Anglo-American settlers moved to the area, and wells were dug. During the digging, they found large underground rock walls that were initially believed to be manmade. Later study of the wall-like features by geologists and archaeologists found them to be jointed, natural sandstone dikes that had intruded Cretaceous marl. The town was established April 17, 1854 and named after these natural rock walls. While originally part of Kaufman County, in 1873, Rockwall County was formed with Rockwall being the county seat.
San Jacinto Plaza Music Series is held Friday and Saturday evenings May through October 7:00pm-9:30pm. The City of Rockwall Main Street invites you to come celebrate summer! Spend an evening in Downtown Rockwall’s quaintest public space, San Jacinto Plaza. Café tables and chairs, available first-come, first serve. Seat walls fill the space with additional seating but guests are encouraged to bring comfortable chairs, food and beverages. There is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the music with your family and friends. Restaurants, public parking and restrooms all within walking distance. The music series is sponsored by the City of Rockwall.
Rockwall Farmers Market is every Saturday May through September. Established in 2008 by Friends of Downtown Rockwall, a not for profit organization that supports downtown revitalization efforts. The Market is a Saturday morning staple, where customers will find fresh produce, specialty foods, grass-fed beef, fresh baked artisan breads, free range eggs, local honey, jams and tamales to name a few. The market is located on the Historic Courthouse Square and is open from 8AM to Noon each Saturday, May through September.
Many other local events are provided by the Rockwall Parks and Recreation department.Among them the Founders Day Festival which brings local bands along with food trucks and vendors for a giant celebration. In 2018 bigger name bands such as Josh Abbott Band rocked the main stage. The Rib Rub Run & Roll brings out BBQ competitors to compete and local bands come to rock two stages in downtown Rockwall with food trucks and BBQ galore. Rockwall also offers many programs for seniors at the Center.
