DeSoto is a city in Dallas County, Texas and has a total area of 21.6 square miles. The area was first settled in 1847, making it one of the oldest communities in North Texas. A post office was established in 1881, and the settlement was named DeSoto in honor of Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, a doctor dedicated to the community. Historic Nance Farm is located at 1325 Greenbrook Drive, in the Mantlebrook Subdivision in DeSoto, Texas. Nance Farm was designated as a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark in 1976. Otway Bird Nance (1805-1874) brought his wife and ten children from Illinois in 1851 and purchased 640 acres from Peter's Colony. Patriarch Otway B. Nance built the milking barn and the home that same year. He acquired more land, and within the next several years, the Nance Farm property had doubled in size.
DeSoto has an abundance of venues for recreation and entertainment. They include an Amphitheater, Civic Center, Corner Theater, Moseley Pool. Recreation Center and Senior Activity Center. The DeSoto Artists Lab allows up to six artists to work as Artists in Residence in various spaces in the community, working primarily with a designated organization, city agency or in a commercial space where the public has open access to interact with the artists. The stipend-based residencies have mutual benefits for the artist and for the community - providing time and space for artists and other creative individuals to work; and involving residents and visitors in a variety of visual and performing art forms.
The City of DeSoto was honored (only ten honored each year) to be named an All-America City by the National Civic League at the finals for the prestigious award in Anaheim, California on Sunday, June 11, 2006.
