Garland is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and has a total area of 57.1 sq mi. A rivalry between Embree and Duck Creek ensued as the area began to grow around the Santa Fe Railroad depot. Eventually, to settle a dispute regarding which town should have the local post office, Dallas County Judge Thomas A. Nash asked visiting Congressman Joe Abbott to move the post office between the two towns. The new location was named Garland after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland
Building the Arts Center and The Atrium, restoring the Plaza Theatre, and creating the Garland Cultural Arts Commission, Inc. were commitments by the City of Garland to allocate time and funding to encourage the growth of the cultural arts in Garland. The City is proud to continue a tradition of dedication and support of the arts which rivals that of any other suburb in the Metroplex. The Garland Summer Musicals (GSM) was founded in 1983 by the Performing Arts Center Guild in order to create a professional musical theatre program for Garland. Over the years, the GSM has worked closely with Dallas County Community College District through Richland and Eastfield Colleges to offer scholarships to theatre students who are cast in the productions. The GSM has received critical acclaim for the quality of their productions. Auditions are in April and shows are presented in June and July.
The Garland Symphony Orchestra (GSO) provides quality entertainment within the Garland community. Founded in 1978, the GSO is a professional orchestra which offers eight subscription concerts. The GSO season is from October through May. Guest artists are featured throughout the season and season ticket prices are available.
