Prosper is a city in Collin and Denton Counties in the state of Texas with a total area of 22.8 sq mi. The first settlers arrived in 1846 to farm cotton in the black fertile prairie soil. Between 1850 and 1902, two settlements existed - Rock Hill was two miles south of the present town and Richland was one mile north. The development of these small communities was expedited in 1876 when county courts ordered small tracts of land to be established for a quick sale. These tracts, each about 160 acres in size, were sold for $3.50 per acre. Dr. A. T. Bryant of McKinney purchased what later became the center of the present town. The towns merged during the establishment of St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad in March 1902. When community officials applied for a post office with the name "Richland", they were informed that the city name was already taken. Postmaster B.J. Naugle asked for an alternative name, and J.C. Slaughter suggested the name "Prosper" because crops that year had been very prosperous.
The Prosper Parks and Recreation Department provides active and passive recreational opportunities for all citizens of Prosper in an accessible, sage environment, while promoting the preservation of the Town's natural resources. The Town of Prosper is special! They host numerous community events and activities throughout the year. January 18 through April 28 an annual community activity in Prosper brings attention to fitness! Every new year, Mayor Smith and the Parks and Recreation Department present the Mayor's Fitness Challenge to energize residents and bring a focus to fitness in the community after the holidays. Celebrate Prosper in the Park - An event to enjoy music under the stars! The beautiful Frontier Park is the perfect venue for this outdoor September event featuring blues and jazz bands.
The Prosper Christmas Festival is the Town's signature event! Typically held the first Saturday in December, the event is a Prosper tradition of holiday and community spirit! Enjoyed by thousands of families each year, the event is free of charge and hosted on the grounds of Prosper Town Hall. A true community affair, the festival engages families, businesses, nonprofit groups, artisans, community partners and sponsors at various levels. The festival typically features Santa’s Workshop; Kids' Christmas Shoppe, with proceeds benefitting the Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund; Community Stage performances with local talent; Kid Zone with rides and games; horse drawn carriage rides; shopping; unique food items for sale; talented artisans; and demonstrations from local artists and performers. The annual Community Tree Lighting, featuring a countdown to the lighting, and fireworks cap off the festival each year. The event is held, free of charge to the public, each year due to the generosity of sponsors at various levels. The prelude to the festival is the Prosper Rotary Club Christmas parade.
